Butterfly

 'Butterfly' Paper collage
copyright 2012 by Shiloh Moore

It's been a tough couple of months with a relapse of severe symptoms.  I have this piccie up my sleeve from 19/5/12  so I thought it might be time to reveal it now and keep the blog going but give me some time to improve before working on my next post.

May it be a symbol of what's to come - now's time to go into my cocoon.  May I heal in time and emerge as the butterfly that's within me :)

Happy Birthday Balloon Girl

'Happy Birthday Balloon Girl'
Watercolour and Pitt Pen on Babysitter's Club Book Paper

17/11/12

I wanted to create something that brought me joy.  Thinking of a little girl being lifted by balloons to travel, flying over gorgeous hills and mountains - this image brought me joy.  I made the balloons spell out 'Happy Birthday.'

I painted this on a second hand second copy of p 7 of 'Kristy And The Secret Of Susan' from the Babysitter's Club series by Ann M. Martin, because that series brought me much joy in my childhood/tween days.

Mother + Child Nativity

'Mother + Child Nativity'
9"x12" Acrylic and pen on canvas
copyright 2012 by Shiloh Moore

This painting is from a simple line drawing of the nativity scene.  At its centre is mother Mary cradling baby Jesus, forming the shape of a love heart.  They are surrounded by the simple structure of the stable.  Shining above is the guiding star.

Prints of this canvas are available as cards raising money for the charity Change For ME through their collaborative art initiative Art 4 ME on Redbubble. (<<<click for the link)

'The Best Support' - 'All I Did Was Listen'

Today a poem and drawing I created when I was 16 was featured in a blog by one of my favourite artists.  Her name's Rachel Awes and her blog is "All I Did Was Listen."  Today's post (including my drawing and poem) is 'Listening to You' which is in a series of guest posts on Fridays, on the theme of 'Listening'.

Rachel does wonderful line drawings with colour, combined with a quote, usually something inspired by her experiences as a psychologist.  She has a new book out filled with her gorgeous drawings, called 'All I did was Listen' which you can order on Etsy (click on the title for the link).  I can't wait to receive my copy in the mail!

I will include for you my drawing and poem shared on her blog.  It is one of the poems in my book "Stranger In The Moving Chair," self-published 2004.

"The Best Support"
>
>
The best way to help
Is to listen
 >
Advice seems to pour
From those
Who insist they understand
But have never experienced it.
 >
Those who help
Are those who listen
 >
Those who accept
There is no magic cure
Accept they cannot instantly
Make things happily ever after
 >
The best support
Is not a quick fix
But a listening ear,
No judgment,
And acceptance.

completed 3/10/12
12x16" Mixed Media on Canvas

I love dogs and I have two special friends who super love Daschunds, so I did this with them in mind.  They are a particularly cute breed!

I did this in a similar style to 'Spiralbird' (August 2012) and 'SpiralKittyLove' (Sept 2012,) using acrylics and pen and Alison Ellis Design papers.  I think this will complete the series.

Namaste Girl

'Namaste Girl'

4"x6" Watercolour and Pitt Pen on Paper

I have been fascinated by the Indian greeting 'Namaste'.  I love the meaning I once read of 'The divine in me acknowledges the divine in you' as a greeting on meeting or parting.

I also love drawings and paintings of girls, so I was doodling and came up with this one.  She greets you with respect, with love from her heart.

Dove Tree Mandala

'Dove Tree Mandala'
copyright 2012 by Shiloh Moore
Mixed Media on Canvas
14"x14" square

I've had this piccie in mind for a long time.  In early July I made a scribble that had the beginnings of the idea:

I wanted to use the tree as a circle in a square like a mandala.  I've been looking at art by mixed media artists so I wanted to experiment and use different media and textures.

In the foreground I made doves using the design I created for the doves in "Be Free" (Sunday Feb 12, 2012 on ByShi).  I made them from beautiful black and purple musical manuscript papers by 'Alison Ellis Design - A Formal Affair'.

In the background, to make the circle in the centre, I glued down some out-of-copyright manuscript within the circle.  Then I scrunched some tissue paper and glued that down, before doing the wash with watercolours in greens.  Here is the paper with tissue:

For the sky around the tree I glued down text from a book I bought cheaply from a thrift shop.  Then I covered this with scrunched tissue paper and then coloured it using watercolours.

I joined the two backgrounds together and outlined them in black:

Then I thickened the outline in pen and added design to the sun and the trunk of the tree.

I liked it as is, but as it's such a large canvas I thought it still needed a foreground.  So I went ahead and added the cut out doves and outlined them in pen.  I put tiny doves in the corners and added the wavy lines to the corners to give it a finished look and so the corners didn't look bare.

To me this symbolises peace, freedom, beauty, earthiness, nature and love.

SpiralKittyLove

'SpiralKittyLove' copyright 2012 by Shiloh Moore
12"x16" Mixed Media on Canvas
Started 6/8/12 completed 16/9/12

I love animals and pets.  I have a lot of friends who have gorgeous precious kitties and I wanted to create something dedicated to their wonderful furbabies, continuing in the style I used for the painting 'SpiralBird'

I'd like to show you the development of the painting:

1) Firstly I was doodling until I had an idea of how I would express what I wanted to create:
2) Then once I had an idea of what I wanted to draw I developed that picture:
I could envision the final product already and knew all the steps to take, but it took time doing every following step, and I had to pace myself so I didn't overdo things physically.  So it took 10 days working on it bit by bit (and banning myself from working on it more than was physically healthy for me.)  I was itching to get it done and see the final product, but I had to contain my enthusiasm and practice patience, and work on the piece bit by bit, only when able.

3) The next step was to put the coloured background on the canvas.  I used pearlised purple acrylic paint with hints of other colours seeping through (secret technique I love: using a squeegie!)
4) Then I painted silver paint onto some bubble wrap and then printed it to add some silver to the background:
5) I then ripped and glued on some of the gorgeous paper that inspired my colour palette, one of the beautiful papers in the 'A Formal Affair' scrapbooking paper range by Alison Ellis Design (copyright 2011).
6) Then I photocopied my final cat drawing and enlarged it.  I cut it out and placed it on the canvas using repositioning tape to keep it secure but not glued down, so I could draw the outline of the cats onto the canvas (another technique would be to trace or use carbon paper but I chose this technique as it was quite simple and a carbon outline could be difficult to see on the shiny dark surfaces.)
7) Then I drew the outline with a permanent marker:
8) Then removed the paper drawing:
This is what it looked like:
9) Then I painted the cat silhouettes in silver:
10) And finally, I drew on the kitty faces and the spiral/love heart design to the bodies of the kitties using permanent markers:
Finito!  Sending spiralkittylove out there to all those cat lovers!

Spiralbird

'Spiralbird' copyright 2012 by Shiloh Moore
11" x 14" Mixed Media on Canvas
Completed 26/8/12

I found some beautiful purple paper with silver scribbled sheet music on it, by Alison Ellis Design scrapbooking paper.  I wanted to use it in a mixed media painting.  I thought of using it with a bird so the music was bird song.  I drew a simplified image of a bird and I imagined it with spirals coming up from the bottom.

I played around with pearlised coloured acrylic paints for the background.  Then added some silver spots using bubblewrap.  Then I glued on the scrapbooking paper.  Then I drew on the outline of the bird and it looked like this:

Then I filled in the body with silver and it looked like this:

Then I drew on the spirals and Spiralbird was complete!

Little Girl

Pitt Pen and Watercolour 23/6/12

A friend had a little baby girl recently.  For her babyshower I drew the below drawing of a little girl, and added colour for the above watercolour version, for them to keep in the little girl's bedroom.

Reindeer

'Reindeer'

(Painted 9/6/12)
8"x12" Acrylic and Permanent Marker on Canvas

I drew a tiny drawing of this reindeer years ago, and rediscovered it looking through my art journals.

I first re-drew it in January and added the colours in the green and red prints below.

I know it's not Christmas, but I'd rather paint now as I feel inspired, so I painted the above canvas with red, white and green acrylic paints, and then drew the line drawing of the reindeer in permanent marker.

So here's some reindeer - just in time for 'Christmas in July' I guess!
